reckonsMichael Bevan Bevan has to get the nod over Hussey at this stage in Hussey's career. Who could ever for forget that straight drive for 4 of the last ball of the match to win the game. Last reply 21 Jan 2009

MickTower: With Hussey's recent form this argument is definitely tipping Bevan's way. 21 Jan 2009

kenny: About time you replied trouncey, did it take you all this time to come back with a response? You clearly don't work in an environment that requires quick thinking. Now, back to the debate. You’ve obviously forgotten which team we're voting on here, this is the All Time One Day team. Introducing test match statistics is stupid, though doesn't surprise coming from you. That's why our test team is quite different to our one day team, it requires a different type of player. James hopes will never open in the test team, just as Phil Jacques will never open in the one day team. Please, go take another month off and come back with a better argument. Bevan over Hussey, still stands. 21 Apr 2008
-
Trouncey: I think Kenny you will find it was Bevan's inability to deal with these 'quality bowlers' that kept him out of the test team and was why he was ok against the old ball at the end of the innings. Hussey on the other hand is an accomplished test and one day player and can bat at any position including opening where he averages more than 100. Game Set Match. 21 Apr 2008
-
kenny: I disagree, Hussey would have struggled against the bowlers mentioned above. Let's take Wasim Akram for example, we've seen how well Hussey and his mates go against quality swing bowling. He'd be lucky to last an over. Case dismissed, Bevan over Hussey! 16 Mar 2008
-
Trouncey: Hey Kenny how old do you think Bevan is, Kapil Dev??? He was in the old folks home by the time Bevo came on the seen. I accept your point, but unfortunately you can only play against those tat are around so an unfair comparison, I think Hussey would have faired just as well against the great bowlers and given the chance would have happily faced them!! He is a better batsmen in every way. Don't forget the bowlers could bowl bouncers back then in a one dayer, now they are allowed one. 14 Mar 2008
-
kenny: Statistics aren't everything mate. Let's compare the bowlers Bevan had to contend with during most of his career - Curtley Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, Allan Donald, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Kapil Dev etc, now let's compare these bowlers with the ones Hussey has had to face - James Anderson, Liam Plunkett, Ryan Sidebottom, Sreesanth, Malinga... I know who I'd prefer to be facing. 13 Mar 2008
-
Trouncey: Mick T, B man yoa are on drugs. Bevan was good, Hussey is great, his average is 55.6 higher, than Bevans, after 85 games how many more does he have to play before you accept this as his average. His strike rate is 86.99 yet Bevans was only about 75 . I agree they play a similar role but Hussey is far better at it. the biggest difference is that Hussey can clear the fence easily, did Bevo ever hit a six? Hussey will have a crack at the end of an innings and lose his wicket, Bevo did not, Bevo played for the not out, which I have no problem with except when comparing him to the mighty Hussey!!! 13 Mar 2008
-
B Man: Yes that was a classic Bevan moment. And I agree, more time is required for Hussey to take the mantle, and he might be too old and run out of time. He is cast out of the same mould and is playing a critical role in a somewhat fragile batting line at the moment. Bevan gets my vote in the all time team, though Hussey is a gun. 12 Mar 2008

B Man: I think Simmo is genuinely injured, unlike Mr. Gary Ablett Junior who is afraid to get out their and mix it with the big boys. Has a mysterious 'one week' injury. (See previous thread: http://www.choppingblock.com.au/post_re-soft_439.aspx). 10 May 2008
-
MickT: Oh no emz, the case worsens. I hope you're not planning on being a lawyer one day. The Hall of Fame game is designed for the best players in the AFL to take the field together, hence the reason we won't see Adam Simpson out there tonight. 10 May 2008
-
emz: errr, pretty sure Simmo's not actually playing in the Hall of Fame game, hmmm..... However, this just serves to further prove the point that he is underrated, not that he doesn't deserve a spot. 7 May 2008
-
footyfreak: Sorry Mick, you're obviously not watching enough North Melbourne games. Adam Simpson is consistently in the teams best and is one of the most under rated captains in the league. Maybe you'll watch the Hall of Fame game and see what he actually does on the field. 25 Apr 2008
-
MickT: emz, sometimes in life you need to face reality. Having won 2 coaches awards in your junior days I can understand how you can relate to Adam Simpson. Unfortunately from what i've seen, Adam Simpson is always in the packs making sure the opposition gets first use of the ball. 25 Apr 2008
-
emz: I noticed you'd chopped Adam Simpson and was horrified - I won't hear a bad word against him. He is always in the packs, making sure North get first use of the ball. And secondly, I was very offended at your opinion on the 'Coaches Award' - I got 2 of them in my junior days...... Maybe this diatribe against such an award stems from your own junior days when you missed out on both the best and fairest, and the coaches, award, and have now felt the need to turn this bitterness into an unwarranted attack on the Coaches Award. 23 Apr 2008
-
MickT: B Man before I respond to your reply, I'd like to tell you about an award called the 'Coaches Award'. At most junior football clubs, there's always one kid who is a bit of a loser, but he tries really hard. This kid never wins anything, so most clubs have a 'Coaches Award' that they use to reward the kid for all his efforts. When North Melbourne picked Adam Simpson as their Captain, I suspect a similar criteria to the 'Coaches Award' was used to make this decision. 25 Mar 2008
-
B Man: That is ridiculous MickT. Admittedly not in our best today though the guy is worth his place on pure effort alone. He leads by example and would be one of the first picked by anyone down at the club. 24 Mar 2008

reckonsGary Jnr Ablett Just as Sydney looked like running over the top of Geelong, in steps the best player in the AFL (and if he continues down this path, best ever player in the AFL). Marks outside 50 - goal, intercepts a pass handballs to Hunt - goal, crumbs the pack - goal, takes a mark on a tough angle - goal. GAME OVER. Thanks GAZ. Last reply 21 Apr 2008

Trouncey: It pains me to agree as Mick T is rarely on the mark, but Abett is a freak and will become ONE of the best players to ever play the game. His ability to hold his feet and win his own ball is exceptional and the rest speaks for itself. Having said that, on potential I feel there is a young man by the name of BUDDY who might just trump them all. 21 Apr 2008
-
footyfreak: OK, the thread was going OK until you added the potentially 'best ever' line! Yes he is good, though has a huge amount to prove before he can even be mentioned in the elite all time group. As much as I hate to say it I did like his game though - the next James Hird? 20 Apr 2008
